Functional Dyspepsia and Panic-Like Symptoms: What to Assess

Functional dyspepsia involves recurring upper-abdominal symptoms without an identified structural explanation after appropriate assessment. Stress and digestive symptoms can interact, but chest tightness, palpitations or shortness of breath should not automatically be attributed to digestion or panic.

Check new or changed symptoms first

Seek urgent care for severe chest pain, fainting, significant breathing difficulty or other emergency symptoms. Persistent vomiting, swallowing difficulty, bleeding, unexplained weight loss or a changing pattern also needs medical assessment. A previous normal test does not rule out every future problem.

Record the digestive pattern

Note fullness, early satiety, upper-abdominal discomfort, meal timing, bowel symptoms and any stress association. Bring previous test results and the clinician’s diagnosis. This helps separate what has already been evaluated from what is still uncertain.

Understand the traditional discussion

TCM may describe patterns such as middle-jiao disharmony or upward-rushing qi. These concepts organize traditional reasoning; they do not prove a cardiac symptom is harmless or establish the effectiveness of a particular formula for another patient.

Prepare for an individualized consultation

Bring medicines, supplements, food-related triggers and relevant history, including pregnancy or kidney and liver disease. Our Chinese herbal service can discuss suitability alongside your medical plan. Do not copy a formula from a case report.

Keep the case account in context

The separate TCM case reflection discusses one account in detail. It can illustrate reasoning, but an individual response is different from controlled evidence and cannot predict your outcome.

Practical questions before booking

If tests were normal before, can I assume every attack is the same?

No. New, severe or changing symptoms deserve reassessment.

Does stress mean the symptoms are imaginary?

No. Digestive symptoms and distress can interact. Both deserve attention within an appropriate assessment and treatment plan.
