Physical Rehabilitation in New York: From Assessment to Activity

Physical rehabilitation becomes more useful when it connects an assessment with the activities you want to regain. At Wongs Acupuncture and Angel Alliance Physical Therapy, PT is available in Manhattan, Forest Hills and Great Neck; an initial appointment is approximately 75 minutes.

What does physical therapy involve?

A physical therapist reviews your symptoms, relevant medical history and the activities you find difficult. Depending on your needs, the assessment may include joint movement, strength, balance, walking and movement coordination. This helps identify practical goals and an appropriate starting point.

Treatment may combine therapeutic exercise, movement education and hands-on techniques. The selection and pace depend on the assessment and your response. Physical therapy is one part of rehabilitation; services such as speech therapy and occupational therapy are separate professions and are not being advertised here.

When might an assessment be helpful?

  • Muscle or joint pain that limits everyday activities.
  • Reduced movement, strength or confidence following an injury.
  • Recovery after surgery, coordinated with your surgeon’s instructions.
  • Balance or walking difficulties that need an individual assessment.

The cause of a symptom matters. A therapist may recommend further medical evaluation when a problem falls outside the scope of physical therapy. Sudden weakness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe symptoms after an injury need prompt medical attention.

Your first visit

  1. Bring relevant reports, referral information, a medication list and any postoperative restrictions.
  2. Wear clothing that allows comfortable movement and access to the area being assessed.
  3. Discuss the activities you want to improve and what a useful change would look like for you.
  4. Review the proposed plan and any home exercises before you leave.

Please send insurance information before the appointment so the office can check plan participation, referral or authorization requirements and expected out-of-pocket costs. A benefits check is not a guarantee of payment.

How is progress reviewed?

Progress is considered through changes in symptoms and function: for example, walking tolerance, stair use, range of motion, strength or confidence with a specific task. Home practice may be adjusted as your ability changes. The number and frequency of visits depend on your condition, goals, restrictions and response; a fixed recovery time cannot be promised.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral?

Requirements depend on your situation and insurance plan. Contact your chosen office before booking so the team can check what documentation is needed.

How many sessions will I need?

Your therapist recommends an initial plan after assessment and reviews it as you progress. Recovery and insurance limits vary.

Can physical therapy and massage be booked separately?

Yes. Our medical massage and aromatherapy massage pages describe separate services. Please specify the service when contacting the office.

Appointment length and same-day care

Allow approximately 75 minutes for an initial physical therapy appointment. Acupuncture, PT and medical massage can also be coordinated on the same day according to your symptoms and individual assessments. Contact the office first to confirm each practitioner, the sequence, total time and costs. Separate services are not automatically included in one initial appointment or covered by the same insurance benefit.

What a meaningful progress check can look like

The measure should fit the goal: walking duration for a commuter, stair tolerance for a person managing steps at home, or a specific lifting task for work. Repeating a relevant task under similar conditions can show more than a generic “better or worse” question.

Prepare for changes between visits

Ask how to progress or reduce the home exercise plan, what symptoms need a call and how surgical restrictions will be respected. A return-to-activity plan should reflect the actual demands you face. Use the PT service and team profiles to confirm the appropriate appointment.

Practical questions before booking

Do I need pain to be completely gone before any activity?

That depends on the condition and medical restrictions. Ask your therapist for a specific activity plan and acceptable symptom limits.
